About Ben Smith

My journey into lutherie was not linear. Initially, I pursued academic interests, studying literature, languages, and ethnomusicology, which led me to a career in community building and non-profit work focused on traditional American music. Despite my academic achievements, I felt an ever-growing need to work with my hands and create something tangible. My upbringing in a family of professionals and artisans—doctors, toolmakers, woodworkers—instilled in me an appreciation for both intellectual pursuits and craftsmanship.

In 2010, I decided to follow this calling. Armed with my grandfather’s tools, some carefully selected woods, and a desire to create, I began building my first guitar. Since then, my craft has become a pursuit of resonance in both sound and spirit. Each Smith & Fison guitar is the product of tradition, skill, and an unwavering respect for the natural materials that breathe life into it. These instruments are designed to foster a deep connection between the player, the instrument, and the music they create.

PS: Who are Smith and Fison? Isn’t there just one of you?

Yes, I named my company after both my paternal (Smith, US) and maternal (Fison, UK) sides of the family, because both of them have played essential roles in who I am and how I build my guitars. My parents and all four of my grandparents are often with me in spirit; Smith & Fison tries to honor those connections.
